What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve is damaged by factors such as increased intraocular pressure (or ocular pressure for short). Because the optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain, its damage (gradually) causes the visual field to fail, and if the disease is not treated and progresses, it can eventually lead to complete blindness.

What causes glaucoma?

In some cases, the cause of glaucoma can be diagnosed, such as trauma to the eye, some eye surgeries, and eye angle closure, but in many cases, glaucoma is a disease of unknown cause and many genetic andenvironmental factors are involved.

What are the types of glaucoma?

Glaucoma can be divided into two categories: open-angle glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma. It is good to know that the angle of the eye is the part of the eye that is located between the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the cornea (the transparent part of the eye). Clear fluid is usually moving in the front of the eye; This fluid is produced inside the eye and exits the eye angle. If the angle of the eye is damaged or closed, this fluid will not be able to leave the eye and will increase the pressure inside the eye and cause glaucoma. In most cases, patients experience wide-angle glaucoma, but a significant percentage of patients also have narrow or closed eye angles.
